What is the Style Creator?
The Style Creator lets you shape the aesthetic style of your images by creating custom Style Reference Codes (--sref). This tool is exclusive to midjourney.com.
Create your style by choosing from the grid of images presented to you, and the Style Creator uses the styles you pick (and the ones you don't!) to create a new and unique style code you can use over and over again in your prompts.
There are two ways to use the Style Creator:
- Head to the
Style Creator Page from the main website navigation menu and enter a prompt to get started.
- Use a prompt you already have from your Create Page by hovering your mouse over the prompt area and clicking the
Style Creator button.
Important: Preview images generated in the Style Creator use your GPU time.
Prompt Importance
The prompt you enter in the Style Creator is used to generate the preview images for your new style after each round. It doesn’t guide the Style Creator itself, and it won’t always match the content of the sample style images you pick from.
- Use a simple prompt to get the clearest view of what your style does.
- Use a complex prompt with extra parameters if you want to experiment. Keep in mind that complex prompts blend their own details with your new style code in the preview images. When you use that same style code with a different prompt later, the results may look different.
Images generated in the Style Creator use Midjourney version 7. If you start with a prompt from an older version and it includes parameters that are not compatible with V7, it may error unless you remove the parameters. View a compatibility list in our Version article.
Style Creator Walkthrough
-
Pick Your Prompt
To start fresh, click
Style Creator on the left navigation menu and enter a prompt.
If you're going for a very specific style, you can also provide a description of the style or use an existing style code to kickstart the process.
To save GPU time and speed up previews, you can add
--draftto your prompt. For more information, see our Draft Mode article. If you prefer to use an existing prompt from your Create Page, hover over the prompt text and click the
Style Creator button.
-
Pick From Sample Styles
Scroll the page and click the sample style images that best match the style you want.
Focus on the style of the images, not the content (it may not match your prompt). The Style Creator learns from both what you select and what you don't select.
-
Refine Your Style
As you continue scrolling and selecting, the styles shown to you will get closer to your desired look. The Style Creator will periodically regenerate your prompt into new preview images using a custom style code (
--sref).Each new set of preview images represents one refinement round. Hover your mouse over the thumbnail preview image to see three of the images in a larger view. Click the thumbnail to pin the larger images to the sidebar.
Continue scrolling and selecting the images that best match your style.
Important: Each set of preview images uses your GPU time. -
Refinement Rounds
Early rounds may vary a lot and the sample styles may seem random. This is normal as the Style Creator narrows in on your taste.
Most styles stabilize after 5–10 rounds. Rounds 10–15 bring more detail. Past round 15, changes are small and subtle. -
End Your Session
When you're happy with the style shown in your preview images, click the X or End Session button.
Sessions cannot be reopened after closing, so make sure you are finished before you exit.
All preview images and style codes created during your session are saved on your Create Page. -
Use Your Style
On your Create Page, each set of preview images from your session has its own style code.
Click a code to add it to the Imagine bar. You can use that style with any prompt.
Click the heart iconon an image to mark it as liked. You can filter by Liked images on the Organize Page or search
liked: trueon the Create Page to easily find it later. -
Extra Tips
- If none of the sample styles fit what you're looking for, continue scrolling to load new images. Skipping does not affect your style development.
- Turn on hotkeys using the hotkey icon
for faster selecting.
- Hover your mouse over any sample style and use the buttons to
Try it right away,
view more details about the style, or
save it to your Liked Styles on the Explore Page.
- Add
--draftto your prompt to save on GPU time and generate preview images faster.
Combining Style Codes
If you enter the Style Creator with a prompt that already contains a style reference code, the Style Creator will add your newly generated style code in addition to the existing one. These codes don’t merge—they both stay active. That means the preview images you see are created using two separate style reference codes at the same time.
If you close a session and later reopen the Style Creator from one of the images you created, that image’s prompt will already include a style reference code. Any new refinements will stack an additional style code on top of it.
To match the look you see inside the Style Creator, make sure to use both style codes together in your future prompts.
