Explore and switch between Midjourney's model versions using the version parameter: --version
or --v
What are Versions?
Think of versions like software updates. When software gets updated to a new version, it might have better graphics, new features, or fix problems from earlier versions. Similarly, Midjourney versions refer to different sets of rules or methods the AI uses to create images.
Each version might handle prompts differently, have unique artistic styles, or offer improved image quality. If you like how one version makes images, you can stick with it or try a new version to explore its capabilities. By choosing a specific version, you decide which set of rules the AI follows to generate your image.
The newest and current default model is version 6.1. Each version excels in different aspects, offering a range of creative possibilities to match your needs.
For information about older versions, please see our Legacy Features article.

Niji 6
Niji models are a special series within Midjourney, developed in collaboration with Spellbrush to focus on Eastern and anime aesthetics and illustrative styles. These models are perfect for anyone interested in creating artwork with vibrant, detailed visuals that capture the essence of anime. Niji models even have their own dedicated website and Discord server, providing a tailored experience for anime enthusiasts.
The Niji 6 model, released on June 7, 2024, features improved rendering of Japanese text, handling short Japanese kana text effectively and, at times, even rendering simple Chinese characters. Additionally, it offers better image detail, particularly in elements like the structure of anime eyes, and addresses certain minor image artifacts that affected a small number of previous generations.
