What are Upscalers?

Once you've created an image you love, you'll likely want to make it bigger to share or save! This is called upscaling, and it takes your image to its largest size, ready for downloading or sharing. Different versions of Midjourney start with various default image sizes and offer distinct upscalers.

With the latest Midjourney version, your images start at 1024 x 1024 pixels (using the default aspect ratio). You can then use the Creative and Subtle upscalers to bump up your images to 2048 x 2048 pixels.

If you're working with different aspect ratios, your image size will change. Check out the chart below to see how some common aspect ratios affect image sizes in version 6.

Aspect Ratio Initial Images Subtle/Creative Upscale
1:1 1024 x 1024 pixels 2048 x 2048 pixels
4:3 1232 x 928 pixels 2464 x 1856 pixels
2:3 896 x 1344 pixels 1792 x 2688 pixels
16:9 1456 x 816 pixels 2912 x 1632 pixels

Need a larger image than what Midjourney offers? No worries! There are plenty of third-party upscaling tools and software out there to help enlarge your images. A great place to find recommendations is our Midjourney community on Discord. Members often share tips and experiences on which tools they prefer!

Upscalers use your subscription's GPU minutes. Upscaling can take up to twice as many GPU minutes as generating your initial images.

Subtle vs Creative Upscale

In version 6, you have two options to upscale your images: Subtle and Creative. Both will double the size of your original image. If you choose the Creative upscaler, it might change your image a bit as it adds new details. On the other hand, the Subtle upscaler keeps changes to a minimum, preserving the look of your initial image as closely as possible.

Pro Tip: Using the Creative upscaler can sometimes help correct small issues in your image, like awkward hand positions or odd facial expressions. Plus, you can re-do the upscale more than once. Each time you do, you'll get a slightly different result. Just remember that each Creative or Subtle upscale consumes GPU minutes.

Upscaling Your Image

  • Start by clicking on any image you've made on your Create or Organize page. This will open the image, revealing more options.

Next, look for the "Creation Actions" section where you'll find the Upscale options. Select Subtle or Creative to immediately start upscaling your image. The finished result will appear on your Create page.

If you can't find the Upscale options right away, just click "More options" and add a checkmark next to Upscale to make them visible.

Note: If your image was generated in an earlier Midjourney version, then you'll have different upscale options. More information about legacy upscalers is below.

  • After your image is generated, use the U1 U2 U3 U4 buttons to separate your favorite image from the initial grid. Once separated, use the Upscale (Subtle) or Upscale (Creative) buttons to quickly start generating your upscale.

Note: In Midjourney versions 5 and later the U# buttons separate your image from the grid but do not change its size, so they do not consume GPU time. In earlier versions these buttons do increase your image size, and will consume GPU time.

If you have images in Discord that were made before the release of a new upscaler, you can use the show command to "refresh" the upscale options.
