Customize your images using Midjourney's powerful tools!
What is the Editor?
The Editor on midjourney.com provides a simple and easy-to-use web interface for editing and adjusting your favorite images—both Midjourney images and your own personal ones.
This tool lets you play with Midjourney features like remix, inpainting (vary region), pan, and zoom—all at once, or in any mix you choose!
It also offers a few unique tools like Retexture and the ability to use Layers!
Editor Tools
Undo,
Redo &
Reset - If you change your mind or make a mistake you can undo and redo, as well as reset all edits to start over.
Suggest Prompt - Use the power of Describe to generate a prompt based on your image.
Move / Resize - This tool lets you move your image around the canvas, scale it by dragging the corners or using the Image Scale slider, and change the aspect ratio using the preset ratios or by dragging the gray bars on the outside edges of your canvas.

Editor Walkthrough

Select Your Image
Midjourney Image
To edit an image from your Midjourney gallery, click the image to open it from your Create or Organize page and then use the "Editor" button in the Creation Actions section.Your Own Image
To edit an external image, navigate to theEdit page where you have two options: you can either upload an image directly from your device, or paste an image URL.
-
Resize & Paint
For this example we'll use a photo of this cute cat.
To add a crown to the top of the cat's head, we first need to add enough space for the crown by adjusting the aspect ratio. You can do this using the Aspect Ratio presets in the
Move / Resize panel, or by clicking and dragging the short gray bar at the top of the image.
Next, use the Erase tool in the
Paint panel to remove the area where the crown will sit, and add your text prompt to the Imagine bar describing what you want to see. When you're ready, press the "Submit Edit" button.
-
Results
Midjourney will generate four images in the results panel. Each time you make an edit to this image, the results will get added to this panel.
From here you can keep editing, or use the Export options at the bottom to upscale or download your image.
-
Select Tool
If you wanted to change the background behind the cat you can use the
Smart Select tool to create a selection mask over areas of your image. Once highlighted, erase the area within your mask using the "Erase Selection" button. The "Erase Background" button erases everything outside your mask.
Note: Make sure to apply your mask using the erase buttons before submitting your prompt. If you can still see the highlighted green areas, your mask is not yet applied.
-
Retexture
If you wanted to turn this image into a watercolor painting, click over to the Retexture tab and enter your new text prompt into the Imagine bar. When you're ready, hit "Submit Retexture."
-
Layers
If you wanted to use a specific crown for the cat, you can add another image as a new layer from the Layers panel.
Use the check mark in the layers panel to pick your current active layer, and then erase the areas you want Midjourney to generate.
If you want to regenerate the entire image in a cohesive style, try using Retexture.
Smart Select
The Smart Select tool works by creating a selection mask over parts of your image.
- Start by pressing the "Smart Select" button to activate the tool.
- Click on an area of your image to set your first positive (Include) point. This tells Midjourney where to focus.
- To refine the mask, add more positive points and negative (Exclude) points. Exclude points highlight areas you want Midjourney to avoid selecting.
- Keep adding points until your mask covers the areas you want.
When your mask is ready, choose between two options:
- Hit the "Erase Selection" button to erase what's inside the mask.
- Or use the "Erase Background" button to erase everything outside your mask.
Make sure to use either "Erase Selection" or "Erase Background" to apply your mask before submitting your image edits. If you need to clear the mask, use the reset button.
Layers
The Layers panel allows you to add additional images on top of your original image, so you can make more complex compositions.
To add a layer, click the "Add" button and select a new image. To reorder your layers, just click and drag them. If you need to delete a layer, hover your mouse over it and click the trash can icon.
Once a new layer is added, you can use the Editor tools to make selections, erase portions, and move and scale it. Whichever layer has the check mark next to it is the active layer that the Editor tools will apply to.
After you've arranged and erased your layers, you can flatten them into a single layer by submitting the edit. Once flattened, you can continue working on the image or upscale and download it.
When you submit an edit using layers, only the areas of your image with visible transparency will be regenerated (the gray checker pattern)—any visible parts will remain unchanged. To regenerate the entire image, for example in a single cohesive style, use Retexture.
Retexture
The Retexture tool allows you to overlay new styles and details onto your image, while keeping the structure of the original image—like a template.
To use Retexture, click on the Retexture tab at the top of the Editor page, add a new prompt, and Submit.
If there are portions of your original image that you don't want Retexture to use, experiment with Erasing them before doing the Retexture.

The Editor is a powerful tool for unleashing your imagination. To maintain the same moderation standards we've set across Midjourney, we're introducing a few additional, necessary precautions.
By using external images with the Editor, you agree to the following rules in addition to our Terms of Service.
External Image Editor Access & Guidelines
- You must meet the age requirement in our Terms of Service.
- You must follow all applicable laws, our Community Guidelines, and other policies.
- We may remove content or restrict access at our discretion.
Your Responsibilities
- You are responsible for all content you input, create, and share.

Image History & Visibility
Creations made in the Editor will not show up on your Create or Organize pages unless you Upscale them, but they are saved within the Editor. You can continue working on them or Upscale and Download them at any time by going back to the Edit page.
When using externally uploaded images with the Editor or multiple layers, both your uploads and the edited results (including Upscales) are only visible to you—they won't appear on midjourney.com for other users. These images also will not work with the show command in Discord.
