What is Zoom Out?

Take an image you've generated and make it look like you're backing away to reveal a wider view! Imagine your original image getting smaller, while new content appears around it, all based on your original creation and prompt—without altering the original image.

One thing to note is that when you zoom out, it doesn't change the actual size of your image in pixels—it's all about the cool visual effect. It's like giving your image more room to breathe and explore!

Zoom out is compatible with Midjourney versions 5 and later, and zoom values can range from 1.0 to 2.0.

Using Zoom Out

  • Start by clicking on any image you've made on your Create or Organize page. This will open the image, revealing more options.

Next, look for the "Creation Actions" section where you'll find the Zoom Out options. Choose from 1.5x or 2x to quickly zoom out your image. To use a custom zoom value, simply hover over the 2x button. You'll see a pencil Pencil Icon icon pop up. Click it, and you can enter the zoom value you want between 1.0 and 2.0, then click the button to generate your image.

If you can't find the Zoom Out options right away, just click "More options" and add a checkmark next to Zoom Out to make them visible.

If you'd like to change your prompt while zooming out to add new elements, click the "Editor" button. This loads your image into Midjourney's editor, where you can make multiple changes at once (pan, zoom out, remix, and vary region). You can click and drag the corners of your image or use the Scale slider to zoom out.

  • After your image is generated, use the U1 U2 U3 U4 buttons to separate your favorite image from the initial grid. Once separated, use the 🔎 Zoom Out 2X or 🔎 Zoom Out 1.5X buttons to quickly zoom out your image.

    Custom Zoom
If you'd like to change your prompt while zooming out or use a custom zoom value, use the 🔎 Custom Zoom button. This will open a text window where you can change your prompt text and parameters, as well as set a custom zoom value between 1.0 and 2.0, before submitting your prompt.

Pro Tip: You can use Custom Zoom to change the aspect ratio of a generated image by setting the zoom level to 1 (so it will not zoom) and adding or changing the aspect ratio in the prompt text.

    Make Square
If your image has a non-square shape (using a custom aspect ratio), you'll see a Make Square button, allowing you to quickly zoom so that your new image is square. Your image will expand either horizontally or vertically depending on your image's starting aspect ratio.
