What is Chaos?

Think of chaos (known as Variety in web settings) as a way to introduce surprises into your image creation. With chaos set to 0 (the default), the images Midjourney creates will be more aligned with your prompt—like following a recipe to the letter.

But if you turn up the chaos, it adds more creativity. This means Midjourney might take some creative leaps, giving you different and unexpected image results—like adding extra spices to see what new flavors come out. So, with chaos, you decide how much creative "spice" to add to your images! You can set the chaos value anywhere between 0 and 100.

Setting the Chaos Value

  • Add --c # to the end of your prompt in the Imagine bar.

You can choose a default Variety setting for all your images in the settings panel. To do this, click the settings Settings Icon button in the Imagine bar. Once you set it, this will apply to all your future prompts.

  • Add --c # to the end of your prompt in Discord.
